Three harbour peninsulas where the front door is the hard part
Mosman, Hunters Hill and Lane Cove are three separate councils but geographically the same shape: fingers of land pushed into Sydney Harbour, Middle Harbour and the Lane Cove River. Mosman sits on the harbour side of Spit Bridge, with Balmoral, Beauty Point and Clifton Gardens facing Middle Harbour and the streets around Georges Heights climbing steeply from the water. Hunters Hill, one of Sydney's oldest council areas, is a sandstone-cottage peninsula between the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers, and Lane Cove sits on its own peninsula, with Greenwich, Longueville, Northwood and Riverview running down to the water and national park bush on the other side. None of the three has a railway station, so getting anywhere here means a car, a bus or a ferry.
The result is streets that weren't designed for a modern support roster. Plenty are narrow and winding, with blind corners, no footpath and nowhere to park without blocking the road, and some driveways drop away so steeply a worker has to leave the car at the top and walk the last stretch. Certain harbourside homes around Woolwich, Northwood and the Mosman foreshore are genuinely easier to reach on foot from a public wharf than by road, sitting below street level with only a steep flight of steps up to the street above. Spit Bridge still opens for tall boats crossing Middle Harbour, backing Military Road up in both directions with no real warning, so a visit timed around a weekend afternoon can run late through no fault of the worker.
We treat that as a planning problem to solve before the first visit, not something to discover on the day. When someone new joins us here, we ask about the street itself: off-street parking, how steep the approach is, and whether the address is genuinely best reached by a particular route around the peninsula rather than the one a map app suggests. Workers rostered across the three council areas get realistic travel windows between visits, not a schedule that assumes every street is flat with kerbside parking out front. That extra planning is the difference between a worker arriving on time and a participant waiting at the top of their own driveway.

This hub covers three council areas that together make up the lower North Shore: Mosman, taking in Mosman itself, Balmoral, Beauty Point, Clifton Gardens, Georges Heights and The Spit around Spit Junction; Hunters Hill, taking in Hunters Hill and Woolwich between the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers; and Lane Cove, taking in Lane Cove, Greenwich, Longueville, Northwood, Riverview and the Gladesville side of the peninsula. All three are shaped by water: Sydney Harbour and Middle Harbour around Mosman, the Parramatta River around Hunters Hill, and the Lane Cove River around Lane Cove, so almost every suburb here has a foreshore, a nearby wharf and a hill down to the water.
That geography drives how we roster. A worker covering Mosman one day and Lane Cove the next isn't driving in a straight line, they're going around a harbour and over a bridge like Fig Tree Bridge or Gladesville Bridge, or through Spit Junction, so we build the actual road distance into the schedule rather than guessing from how close two points look on a map. Where a participant lives near a wharf and the ferry is genuinely more reliable than fighting traffic on Military Road or Victoria Road, we take that into account too, so fewer visits end up scheduled too tightly back to back.
